GUERNSEY – The gridiron Vikings took on the Chiefs of Wyoming Indian for their first week of battle but fell shy of the victory with a score of 12-26.
The Vikings gave it their all, highlighted by a few key performances. Austin Gretch was able to snag a key interception as the Chiefs’ field position was at the 10-yard line. In the third quarter Conner Bristow had a 19-yard run, followed by a 52-yard carry but was tripped up just before the goal line by a Chiefs defender.
At the end of the first quarter Guernsey led with a score of 6-0. Wyoming Indian tied it up at the half at 6-6. With two seconds left on the clock in the third quarter, the Chiefs were able to run the ball in two yards to score and bring the score up to 12-12.
The battle was lost in the fourth quarter as the Chiefs were able to score an additional 14 points to set the final score at 26-12.
“It was a tough day,” Guernsey Vikings head football coach Neal Hughes stated. “Because we are very short on numbers, and the day was ugly hot, our guys ran out of go. They worked extremely hard, to the point of exhaustion, but the score ended in favor of our opponents.”
