Viking illnesses affect roster, outcomes

GUERNSEY - Last week proved to be tough in the basketball world for the Guernsey boys Vikings basketball team. Struck by numerous illnesses, head coach Steve Zimmerman had the task of filling out his truncated roster and giving his bench some good experience.

“This was a difficult week for the Vikings as illness (influenza) took a toll on us,” Zimmerman said.  “We were not able to field a full team in the last three games losing each of them.  The good side is, we were able to give a lot of experience to young players who will have significant roles when it comes tournament time.  This, the sickness, also forced the varsity players to play in new positions they were not accustomed to.  We hope the expanded roles and experience will also strengthen us for regionals.”

The coach went on to say, “This week is the last week of the regular season and we have three big conference games. Tuesday we will host conference leader Southeast, Thursday we travel to Rock River and Friday we host Hanna-Elk Mountain. Before the Hanna game we will honor our seniors as they play their last game in Guernsey.  We would love to see the gym packed with community support.”

Last week, the Vikings played Lusk, Sioux County, Lingle, and Nebraska’s Banner County.

Scoring in the Lusk game were Aiden Noggle with nine points, draining two three-pointers, Mason Collar put in seven points, had five steals, and three rebounds, Tristan Hohnholt scored seven points with two blocked shots and four rebounds, Tim Radcliffe added two points and blocked three shots, Dawson Bingham added two points, three assists, and three rebounds. Lusk was the victor, 27-78.

The Vikings also played Sioux County, sadly losing 30-50. Mason Collar led his team in scoring with 12 points and two steals, Aiden Noggle added 10 points and three rebounds, Tim Radcliffe contributed six points and eight rebounds, and Conner Bristow added two points and one assist. Natan Vannatter pulled down four rebounds and one steal, and Jayden Wagner grabbed four rebounds.

The Banner County contest was a bit closer, but the Vikings couldn’t quite get ahead and fell 44-52. Aiden Noggle was the leader in points during this game putting in 26 and grabbing two steals, Nathan Vannatter added eight points, nine steals and eight rebounds, Mason Collar contributed six points, three steals and eight rebounds, Tim Radcliffe added two points and two rebounds, and Joey Lewis added two points, three rebounds, and two blocked shots.

The Lingle loss might have been the toughest as the Vikings were only able to score 13 points to Lingle’s 63. Natan Vannatter and Aiden Noggle score five points apiece, Jaden Wagner scored two points, and Austin Gretch added one point and two rebounds.
