VFW to work with Industrial Tech students to create permanent wreath memorial

GUERNSEY - The program of Wreaths Across America has a goal of putting a wreath on every veteran’s grave during the Christmas season. Each veteran’s name is spoken as the wreath is placed, to keep their memory alive.

The Guernsey Lake Post VFW#4471 has participated in this program for the last few seasons but has decided on a different path for next year. A large wreath will be made from metal by the students of Industrial Technology at Guernsey-Sunrise High School under the direction of Troy Reichert. In addition, six smaller wreaths indicating each service will flank the large wreath, with veterans’ names listed under their service emblem. The plaques of each service emblem will have space for veterans’ names to be added as they pass away, to always be present and remembered for their dedication and service to our country.

These wreaths will be placed at the base of the flagpole at the cemetery.

These changes have been made to defer the burden of the cost of individual evergreen wreaths for each grave. The ceremony will still continue, actively remembering veterans. The Guernsey VFW emphasizes, any wreaths bought with the Wreaths Across America program will still be placed on their chosen veteran’s grave. Discounted pre-orders can be made until January 16 with a two-for-one price. Forms are available from any VFW Post or VFW Auxiliary member.
