GUERNSEY – During half-time of the home basketball game on Friday, Guernsey-Sunrise School Board Trustee Kevin Gross highlighted the accomplishments of local students and teachers in designing and creating the Viking mascot statue for the school.
The project started in the fall of 2023 when shop and math teachers Troy Reichert and Jolyn Hillen sought approval for the idea the students had to make a full-size mascot. Then the students were led through the process of designing and creating the masterpiece. A full unveiling of the statue took place in October, but the “mini-unveiling” at the game was for those who couldn’t make it last fall.
“These young men worked hard on this,” one of the instructors, Jolyn Hillen, said. “We ran into a couple things that we all struggled with … but they never gave up. I’m extremely proud of what they have accomplished.”
Students who worked on the project included Tristan Hohnholt, Aidan Noggle, Dom Ramirez, Brody Sterner, and Emmett Dawson.
