Season ends in Douglas for Viking basketball teams

Basketball is over for the season. The Guernsey-Sunrise Viking boys finished their 2018-2019 basketball season with a pair of losses at the Class 1-A East regional playoff in Douglas last weekend.

Season ends in Douglas for Viking basketball teams

DOUGLAS—Basketball is over for the season. The Guernsey-Sunrise Viking boys finished their 2018-2019 basketball season with a pair of losses at the Class 1-A East czzzregional playoff in Douglas last weekend. The story was essentially the same for the Lady Vikings.
In the boys’ bracket, as the number four seed in the South East, the Vikings drew a tough assignment, having to take on the North East’s top-seeded Upton Bobcats in the first round.
It was all Upton from the beginning as they outgunned the Vikes 26-4 in the first quarter and had stretched the lead to 47-11 by halftime. Upton got the win by a 74-35 margin and moved on, sending the Vikes to the loser-out game with Hulett.
Junior Alex Delgado was the Viking’s leading scorer with 15 points. He also had five rebounds and a pair of steals.
Junior Justin Malcom added five points and had six rebounds, and two steals.
Freshman Hunter Warner got his first high school post-season points as he hit the bottom of the net once and also had one rebound and one steal.
The Vikings shot 10 of 25 from two-point range and four of 12 three-pointers. They sank seven of 13 free-throws and took down 16 rebounds. They committed 15 fouls and 21 turnovers.
Upton connected on 23 of 28 two-point shots and seven of 22 treys. They canned seven of 13 free-throws and took down 38 rebounds. They committed 11 fouls and 11 turnovers.

On Friday, the Vikes took on Hulett in what turned out to be their closer for the season.
Upton defeated Hanna-Elk Mountain 70-51, sending them to the championship game against Kaycee. The Bobcats claimed the trophy over Kaycee 72-68.
The game was tight in the first half. The Vikings trailed by just one after the first quarter and just four at the half, 28-24. The third quarter was the Vikes’ undoing though as Hulett outscored them 21-3, pushing the lead to 45-31. Hulett went on to claim the 63-46 win.
Despite the disappointment in the final score, the Vikings played much better against Hulett, putting three players in double figures. Malcom led the charge with 16 points, four rebounds and four steals.
Delgado added 13 points and had 12 rebounds and four steals.
Senior Dylan Rose put in 13 points and had five rebounds and five steals.
Senior Austin Albrecht had three points, three rebounds, and a pair of steals.
Junior Dominick Ibarra had one basket, five rebounds and a steal.
The Vikings hit 14 of 32 two-point shots and three of 14 fom the arc. They made nine of 15 free-throws and took down 34 rebounds. They committed 24 fouls and 28 turnovers.
Hulett hit 16 of 31 two-point range and five of 21 from the arc. The sank 16 of 24 free-throws and collected 29 rebounds. They committed 16 fouls and 20 turnovers.
The Vikings finish the season with a 2-16 overall record which does not include a win over the Douglas junior varsity team. They will lose senior players Austin Albrecht and Dylan Rose and manager Mariah Klatt. This year’s team was coached by Nate Reinhardt.
The top four teams from the East regional moving on the to state finals this weekend are Upton, Kaycee, Lingle-Fort Laramie and Hanna-Elk Mountain. Advancing to the state tournament from the West are Encampment, Farson-Eden, Burlington and Cokeville.
As the fourth seed from the South East, the Lady Vikings had to face the North East’s top-seeded Arvada-Clearmont Lady Panthers in their first-round game. Coming into the tournament with a 17-5 record, the Lady Vikes had their hands full and eventually suffered a 43-22 loss and the Lady Panthers went on to win Hanna-Elk Mountain (41-23) and claim the regional championship Saturday after taking down Lingle-Fort Laramie, 52-47.
The first-round loss sent the Lady Vikes to a loser-out game with Kaycee on Friday. The Lady Buckaroos prevailed 47-33 and qualified for the state tournament with a win over Rock River.
The regional finish order included 1-Arvada-Clearmont, 2-Lingle-Fort Laramie, 3-Hanna-Elk Mountain and 4-Kaycee. Advancing from the West regional are Farson-Eden, Encampment, Cokeville and Burlington.
The Lady Vikes finish with a 2-16 overall record. They will lose senior players Trinity Ayers, Krista Malcom, Bailey Martin, Whitney Martin, Kacey McCoid and managers Kassidy Morales, and Haylee Warner to graduation. This year’s team was coached by Troy Reichert and his assistant, Mindy Kelley.
