Lady Vikings pick up second win of season

Posted

GUERNSEY The Lady Vikings picked up their second win in 10 days and although they had two accompanying road games that were brutal, the second win was encouraging and showed again that all scores aside, this injury riddled team has improved over the course of the season under first-year head coach Brandi McCoid.

The girls traveled Feb. 8 to face a top ranked Lusk team. It was one of those nights. By halftime the girls were already out of the game 29-6 and then ended the third quarter giving up 22 more points. The final score was Lusk 51, Vikings 9. Paige Andrews and Macoyia Stoneking led their team in scoring with 3 points each. Stoneking pulled down 5 rebounds.

Following a crushing defeat in Lusk, the Lady Vikings traveled to Wheatland for another tough nonconference game against the Bulldogs. The Monday game and the Tuesday game were like night and day. The sun came up Tuesday for Guernsey-Sunrise.

In hotly contested first quarter the Wheatland squad took a slim one-point lead, 7-6, but fighting back, the Lady Vikings outscored the Bulldogs by two in the second quarter and took a lead into the locker room. Again, the third quarter was kind to the Vikings and their defense held Wheatland to four points. Going into the fourth quarter the score was 22-17.

After a furious rally and a back-and-forth volley of the score, the Vikings held on and when a last second shot dropped just short for Wheatland, the buzzer sounded and girls had their second win of the season, 26-25.

Stoneking led the team in scoring with 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds. She also led the team with five steals. Her game earned her high praise from coach McCoid who mentioned that Stoneking was becoming an all-around leader for the team. Rylie Thompson scored 6 points and was a beast on the boards going up against two bigger freshmen at Wheatland and held her ground with 12 rebounds. Andrews also contributed six points.

Saturday the girls traveled to Rock River in a horrendous blizzard and through a winter storm advisory.

Little did they know that the blizzard was inside as well. The team was down 17-0 at the end of the first quarter and the shots just were not falling. By halftime the Rock River team had taken the wind out of the Lady Viking sails and when the snow quit falling the score ended up 51-10. Chloe Heer and Thompson led the team in scoring with 3 points each and Thompson again was in double figures in rebounding with 10. Juliana Schiele contributed on the boards with 6 and the Guernsey-Sunrise team outrebounded the Rock River girls 25-24. The girls travel to Hanna to play HEM this Friday for a 5:30 game. HEM is currently the conference leader with a 12-2 record and are ranked #5 in Division 1A. The final game of the season for the girls will take place this Saturday as they go against Rock River with tip off time at noon.
