GUERNSEY—In a game that was close all the way to the end, the Guernsey-Sunrise Lady Vikings opened their season just a bit short of a win as they bowed 36-29 to the Minatare Lady Indians Saturday in the Viking gym.
The Vikes kept pace with Minatare and were down four points at the end of the third quarter, setting up a showdown for the final eight minutes. Taking advantage of some critical Indian turnovers and strong free-throw shooting, Guernsey-Sunrise managed to build a four-point lead with under four minutes to go in the game. Hoping to kill some clock, the Lady Vikes went into a shuffle stall but Minatare broke it up and created several turnovers that quickly turned into enough points to make the difference.
Blake Rose led the Viking scorers with 12 points. Kacey McCoid add eight, six of them coming in the fourth quarter. Trinity Ayers added six and Krista Malcom pitched in three.
