GUERNSEY – A new school year, new faces, and a fresh look are awaiting Guernsey’s youth when they head back to school on August 21st.
Weigel said she and the staff are ready for school to start and are excited for the students to see the updates the school has had over the summer. There is new flooring, the gym floors have been re-surfaced and volleyball lines painted green to be more visible for players, the commons and cafeteria have upgraded furniture and Viking-themed graphics, and there will be an upgraded weight room / wellness room by Sticker Stadium.
“The custodial maintenance team have been amazing – they have worked tirelessly to get everything ready for the first day of school,” Lisa Weigel said.
At their first official day of work on Monday, new staff posed for a picture and rolled up their sleeves to immerse themselves in the active Guernsey-Sunrise school schedule.

Here are a few things they wanted to share with students and the community about themselves:
• Trilby Douglas is the new physical education teacher. She got married this summer in Wheatland. “I’m really excited to be here and look forward to being part of the Guernsey community,” she said.
• Kaitlyn Vigil will be student teaching third graders. She was born and raised in Platte County and loves being a plant parent – her favorite hobby. She is studying education at the University of Wyoming.
• Jeni Waring will be teaching family and consumer sciences. She is a Class of 1989 Guernsey-Sunrise High School graduate. She is also happily engaged to be married. “It’s nice to be back. My family has been in and out of Guernsey since the early 1980s,” she said. Waring has taught preschool and third grade classes, but she is looking forward to her first class of upper grade level students.
• Kailey Bennett is from Afton, and after earning her associate’s at Western Wyoming Community College, completed her bachelor’s of education at the University of Wyoming. She will be teaching second grade. “I’m very excited – I’m looking forward to being in such a tight-knit, close community,” she said. Bennett loves music. She played the flute and piccolo in high school, and most recently played with UW’s Wyoming Thunder marching band. One of her favorite hobbies is playing golf.
• Jessica DeLaurentis will be a special education para this year. She was a substitute teacher last year and is looking forward to something more consistent. DeLaurentis has lived in Guernsey for 10 years and loves to read and garden. “I even like to listen to books while I garden,” she said. This summer, DeLaurentis has read 60 books.
Guernsey-Sunrise principal Liesl Sisson is excited about the experience the new staff is bringing to the school, and is looking forward to having kids back in the building.
“I can’t wait to hear the sounds of our students in the halls,” Weigel said. “I’ve missed them this summer.”
