GREELEY, Colo. ñ The Wheatland Lady Lobos 14U fastpitch softball team brought their season record to 21-9 by going 5-0 and winning the championship in the gold bracket at the Greeley, Colorado, C’s only tournament the weekend of June 19 and 20.
Saturday’s pool-play games started with a 7-1 win against Loveland’s NC Sting. The Lobos also beat Cheyenne Extreme 15-3 clenching a spot in the gold bracket of tournament play. On Sunday the Lobos faced Berthoud Blazers answering the opposition’s 6 runs in the first inning and finishing with a 10-9 comeback nail biter.
That win led to a match-up with a tough Laramie Lightning team. Both teams put strong defenses on the field but the Lobos came out on top with a 3-2 win, punching their ticket to the championship game. In the championship match-up versus a team from the Denver area, Thunder 14U, our Lady Lobos dominated both offensively and defensively chalking up a 6-3 win.
Pitcher, Kenzie Lockman and catcher, Camryn Mickelsen showed strong leadership throughout the weekend. Centerfielder, Hunter Sisson wowed with several amazing catches, gunning out runners at home, and scoring a homerun for the team.
The Lobos were bolstered with the golden gloves of Second basemen and outfielders, Eleni McKee and Teagan Cecil. Delaney Aurich provided relief in the pitcher’s circle and brought solid defense at shortstop.
The consistency from first baseman, Karley Adams, third baseman/Left fielder, Taylor Stills’ hot bat, the support from backup catcher, Audrey Davis, and the lightning speed of utility player, Ella Keil were invaluable throughout the weekend.
Two players were previously engaged and missed the tournament, but team members, Kierstyn Collar and Tatum Struble cannot go without mention. The lady Lobos 14U are coached by Travis Lockman and Scott Aurich with assistance from Jeff Struble and Erik Collar. The 12U Lady Lobos coached by Courtney Sisson went 2-2 for the weekend tournament and took eighth place out of 20 teams.
