Guernsey-Sunrise Schools have had the opportunity to introduce ideas inspired by the Ron Clark Academy (RCA). The RCA is a nonprofit school located in Southeast Atlanta. The RCA has been nationally and internationally recognized for creating a loving, dynamic learning environment that promotes academic excellence and leadership.

The RCA created a house system to allow students and staff members to bond together and make memories that will last a lifetime. The students and staff were divided into 4 houses, Revuer, Altruismo, Amistad and Isibindi. Each house contains students and staff members that work together to learn life skills and friendly competitions. Luckily, Guernsey-Sunrise k-12 were able to participate in the RCA house system.

Many of Guernsey-Sunrise’s teachers were invited to visit the RCA in Atlanta, Georgia. Liesel Sisson, Guernsey-Sunrise k-12 principal, was able to visit the RCA multiple times. Sisson said “I just remembered it was like transforming into a magical school...The energy from the staff and students, the music was always going, the students were always dancing.” Every teacher had a different experience, but they all came back with a smile on their faces.

Saturday, Dec. 11, the Vikings and Lady Vikings were up against the Minatare Indians. After a tough fight against the Lady Indians, the Lady Vikings lost. The final score of the girls varsity game was 44 Minatare and 35 Guernsey.

The boys varsity fortunately brought their first win against the Indians, the final score 65-41. Tuesday, Dec. 14, the Lady Vikings and the Vikings varsity basketball fought hard against the Lusk Tigers. Unfortunately, the Lady Vikings did not take home the win, with the ending score 44-27. The Vikings and Tigers had the crowd on the edge of their seats with the close scores. But the Lusk Tigers took the win with the ending score 45-43.

Guernsey-Sunrise schools are participating in a food drive for our local food bank. This year we are holding a competition for the houses. The house with the most food donated, will be winning a prize. The food is not tallied yet, but it looks that the Amistad house is taking the lead with 50 or more food items.
