Vikings work toward playoffs with 65-12 Midwest win

GUERNSEY—The Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings are closing in on a spot in the Class 1-A Six Man football playoffs, getting a 65-12 win over Midwest Friday night in Guernsey. 

Currently, the Vikes have a 4-1 conference record and hold third place in the East Conference.  They have two regular season games remaining with conference foes Lingle-Fort Laramie and Hanna-Elk Mountain. A win over the Doggers would assure them a first-round playoff berth.

The Vikings took control of the Midwest game from the opening minutes, rolling up a commanding 40-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. 

Senior back Dylan Rose returned a punt for a 66-yard touchdown return and senior Austin Albrecht carried in the conversion to put up the first points on the board at the 8:37 mark.  It was the beginning of the end for the Oilers.

With the offensive line opening the way, Rose scored five rushing scores .  Carries of 18, 61, 16, and 36 yards each produced touchdowns before Midwest was finally able to get six points of their own.  With 23 seconds left in the first quarter, Rose went in from 25 yards out and ran in the conversion, sending the Vikes well on their way to a win. 

The Vikings added seven more on another rushing touchdown by Rose, this time from 11 yards out.  Junior Jeremy Hartt ran in the conversion to push the lead to 47-6 at half. 

In the third quarter, Rose added six more on a 43-yard run, the conversion failed and the Vikes were now up 53-6.

Sophomore back Justin Malcom then scored twice, the first on a 23-yard run and the second on a 12-yard run.  The conversions failed but with 6:32 left to go in the game, The lead went to 65-6.  Midwest got the final points in the game on a 57-yard run with 4:18 to go. 

The Vikings had 369 yards of offense, all on the ground.  They ran 32 plays from scrimmage and had possession for 16:57.  They committed two turnovers and were penalized three times for 30 yards.  They picked up 12 first downs and converted three of six third downs. 

Rose finished the game with 233 yards in 10 carries and seven touchdowns.  He had one punt return for 66 yards and a score.    Malcom also hit the century mark with 112 yards in 12 carries and two touchdowns.  Senior Josh Marshall carried twice for 14 yards, and freshman Hunter Warner had 10 yards in four carries. 

Quarterback Alex Delgado threw twice but had no completions.  He punted once for 45 yards.   

For the defense, Malcom had six solo tackles.  Sophomore Brock Hohnholt had five unassisted tackles and two assists. 

Hartt finished with three lone stops and three assists, one for lost yardage. 

Warner had four solo stops and one assist two for lost yardage.    

Albrecht had three lone stops and two assists.

Marshall had one single tackle and four assists. 

Rose had two unassisted stops and one assist.

Senior Justin Martinez had a pair of lone stops. 

Senior Jason Wenzel had one solo tackle and one assist.

Midwest had 321 total yards of offense, 214 on the ground.  They ran 52 plays and had possession for 30:55.  They lost one of five fumbles and were penalized nine times for 45 yards.  They picked up eight first downs and converted two of 13 third downs. 

The Vikings will turn their attention to the Lingle-Fort Laramie Doggers this week.  The Doggers are 1-4 in the conference and 2-4 overall.  The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. at Dogger Stadium in Lingle.
