GUERNSEY - Fourteen diplomas were presented to the Guernsey-Sunrise Class of 2022 Sunday afternoon in the Viking gym as parents, friends and family were on hand to witness the special milestone event.
Members of the class included William Baker, Maitthias Beers, Tyler Cisneros, Dakota Conner, Kiyara Conner, Stoney Dimas, Caleb Haase, Rawland Isabell, Afton Kelley, Libby Logan, Justin Miller, Alanae Oliver, Chris Ramos and the late Karson Yorges.
Members of the Guernsey-Sunrise administration and Platte County School District #2 board presented the diplomas.
The Viking choir, led by director Matt Hebbert, opened the program with The Star Spangled Banner and later presented their rendition of the piece “Rise Up.”
Kyle Gunderson, a former principal who is currently teaching at Guernsey-Sunrise was the guest speaker. He challenged the class to look forward now and put in the hard work of earning things themselves, noting that the result will always be more gratifying than anything given to them.
Speaking for the class were Libby Logan, Afton Kelley and Caleb Haase.
School counselor Lisa Schuldies read an excerpt of thanks and recognition for each class member as they distributed flowers to members in attendance.
It was also a bittersweet day for this group of students who lost a fellow senior classmate earlier this year. Karson Yorges, who was tragically lost in a car accident in early March, was honored as each class member placed a flower in a vase that was part of a memorial set up near the stage to remember and honor him. Karson’s cap, gown and diploma were displayed and presented to his family members following the ceremonies. There was a standing ovation when his name was announced.
A slide show reminded those gathered of the journey each graduate has made on their way to this special day. From baby pictures to elementary school, the photos were a reminder of how fast young people come and go in their parents’ lives; a message not lost on teary-eyed family members as they reminisced the past 18 years in a matter of minutes.
With diplomas in hand, the Class of 2022 performed the much-awaited tossing of caps, now ready to follow roads that lead from the Home of the Vikings to a future yet unknown.
