Vikings finish tough season with heads held high!

GUERNSEY—With four starters injured and standing on the sidelines as spectators, the Hanna-Elk Mountain Miners took full advantage and notched their eighth win of the season, 68-12 over the Vikes Friday night at Viking Stadium.
It was all Miners in the first half as Hanna-Elk Mountain scored on runs of 41, 21, 3, 4, and 22 yards, a field goal and a 20-yard pass completion, building a 44-0 lead by halftime.
The Vikings finally got points on the board when junior back Brock Hohnholt broke loosed on a 28-yard touchdown run.
Viking sophomore Justin Malcom’s conversion attempt failed and the Vikes were down 44-6 with 6:43 to go in the third quarter.
The Miners picked up another score shortly after and the score went to 52-6 to begin the final quarter.
The Vikings would get one more touchdown as senior back Jeremy Hartt went in for six from two yards out. His conversion try was no good and the score went to 60-12.
The Miners picked up 16 more points on runs of 44 and 27 yards and took home a 68-12 win.
Guernsey-Sunrise ran 38 plays and picked up 185 total yards of offense, 156 on the ground.
They had the ball for 32:38, committed four turnovers and had no penalties.
They picked up nine first downs and converted three of seven third down attempts.
Hohnholt completed one of two passing attempts for 22 yards. Malcom completed one of three passing attempts for seven yards and was picked off twice.
Malcom led the Vikings’ rushing game with 57 yards on 16 carries.
Hohnholt carried five times for 54 yards and one touchdown.
Freshman back Kolten Weinkauf picked up 24 yards on four carries and Hartt had seven carries for 21 yards and a score.
Hartt also had two catches for 29 yards.
Senior defensive back Preston Elmore had seven unassisted tackles, one for lost yardage, and an assist.
Malcom finished with six solo stops.
Hohnholt had four lone tackles and one assist.
Freshman Chase Thompson had four solo tackles, two for lost yardage.
Hartt had one tackle and junior Preston Cook also had one stop.
The Miners rolled up 421 total yards of offense, 374 on the ground. Their time of possession was 13:10, committed no turnovers and were penalized just once for 10 yards.
They picked up 17 first downs and converted five of seven third down attempts.
The Vikings close their season at 2-6. Closing out their high school careers are Alex Delgado, Jeremy Hartt and Preston Elmore. Four-year manager Victoria Sierra will also graduate.
The Miners (#1E, 8-0) will face Meeteetse ( #4W, 5-3) in the opening round of the Class 1A Six-Man playoffs this Friday in Hanna.
In other playoff games, Lingle-Fort Laramie (#3E, 4-3) will go to Burlington (#2W, 5-3) to take on the Huskies. Hulett (#2E, 6-1) will host Farson-Eden ( #3W, 7-2) and Kaycee (#4E, 4-4) will play at Little Snake River (#1W, 8-0).
The state finals will be held in Laramie at War Memorial Stadium on November 15-16.
