Viking teams suffer losses to Rock River, Hulett

GUERNSEY—It was a very tough weekend for the Viking basketball teams.  The Lady Vikings were downed twice at the hands of Rock River and Hulett. 

Rock River and Hulett also picked up wins at the expense of a young Viking boys’ team that has continued to work hard despite their shortcomings.

On Friday, the Lady Longhorns came to Guernsey and prevailed 48-25 and Hulett claimed a 56-34 win Saturday in the Lady Devils’ gym. 

Stats for the girls’ Rock River game were not available at press time.

On Saturday, the Lady Vikes did a good job of spreading the points around. Junior forward Trinity Ayers led with nine points, seven rebounds and three steals. 

Junior forwards Whitney Martin and Kacey McCoid each put in eight points.  Martin took down six rebounds and grabbed four steals.  McCoid finished with eight points and had three rebounds and two steals.

Junior guard Krista Malcom added five points, seven rebounds and three steals. 

Junior guard Blake Rose pitched in four points and had one rebound and two steals.

Senior guard Lakin Reichert had six rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Junior forward Bailey Martin finished with four rebounds.

As a team, they shot 14 of 45 from two-point range and one of 13 from the arc.  They made three of 10 free-throws, and took down 33 rebounds, and had 20 steals and two assists.  They committed 23 turnovers and 16 fouls. 

The losses take the Lady Vikes’ overall season record to 2-16 with just two weekends remaining before the regional tournament in Douglas.  This Friday, they will make the road trip to Harrison, NE to take on the Lady Warriors in a varsity-only contest.  Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.  On the 16th, they’ll play their final home game when they host Hanna-Elk Mountain.  They’ll wrap up the regular season on the 17th at Rock River.  Despite some solid play from their sophomore guards, the Viking boys were on the losing end of a 35-29 score. Alex Delgado led the Vikings with 10 points, six rebounds, three steals, an assist and two shot blocks.

Ryan Harms finished with eight points, including a pair of treys, two rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Senior forward Dale Mote tossed in six points and was strong on the boards, coming away with 11 rebounds, an assist, a steal and a shot block.

Junior forward Austin Albrecht added three points and cleared four rebounds.

Senior forward Garret Oneyear add a bucket and had a pair of rebounds. 

As a team, the Vikes shot 10 of 39 from two-point range and two of 15 from the arc.  They made three of 15 free-throws and took down 28 rebounds (17 offensive).  They had six assists, seven steals, three shot blocks and committed 20 turnovers and 16 fouls. 

On Saturday, the Vikings were on the road for their second matchup of the season with the Hulett Red Devils.  It was a better showing for Guernsey-Sunrise but Hulett prevailed again, this time by a 64-44 margin. 

Mote finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and taking down 11 rebounds. 

Delgado also put in 12 points (including a pair of three-pointers) and had three rebounds and an assist. 

Oneyear chipped in nine points, eight rebounds and an assist.

Albrecht put in four points and had three rebounds and four assists. 

Freshman forward Brock Hohnholt added a bucket and had four rebounds and two assists. 

Sophomore Xavier Smith dropped in a free-throw to complete the Viking point total. 

As a team, the Vikes hit 17 of 47 from two-point range and two of 10 from the arc.  They made four of 10 free-throw attempts and took down 30 rebounds (19 offensive).  They dished out 12 assists, snagged one steal and committed 31 turnovers.  No fouls were shown on the stat sheet. 

The losses put the Vikings’ overall record at 1-14 with three games remaining prior to the regional tournament. 

This weekend, the Vikings will head to Harrison, NE to face Sioux County on Friday evening.  That game tips off at 5:30 p.m.  The junior varsity will play at Glendo on Tuesday, February 13th, tipping off at 5:30 p.m.    They’ll host their final home game on Friday, February 16th against Hanna-Elk Mountain (4:30 p.m.), and close the regular season schedule on the road Saturday, February 17th at Rock River. (1:30 p.m.).

The 1-A regional tournaments will be held in Douglas February 22-24 and the state tourney will follow in Casper March 1-3.
