Lake Guernsey VFW Post 4471 presented Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy awards to Guernsey-Sunrise School students on Thursday, December 20. Patriot’s Pen is a writing contest for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders with the topic, “Why I Honor the American Flag.” The Voice of Democracy contest requires students in grade nine through twelve to write and record a speech on the topic, “Why My Vote Matters.” Fifty-one students entered the Patriot’s Pen contest while 13 entered the Voice of Democracy. Guernsey-Sunrise School teachers who mentored these contests were Karen Wambach, Tim Corkery, Brian Martin, and Kristie Smith. Dan Sisson, First State Bank Guernsey President, donated gift cards, without a fee, for the award of the VFW monetary prizes.
The top three Patriot’s Pen papers (Juliana Scheile, Lily Tillman, and Delaney Wilson) advanced to the District 5 contest, as did the top speech (Krista Malcolm) in the Voice of Democracy.
Post 4471 is very proud of these students and hopes that all of them will continue to participate in contests sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
