On Friday morning, November 9, at 9 a.m., a Veterans Day celebration will be held in the East Gym of Guernsey-Sunrise School. The public is cordially invited to attend and participate.
The celebration will open with the presentation of colors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Legion, and American Legion Riders joint honor guard. The Guernsey-Sunrise School Band will play the Star Spangled Banner and the Kindergarten students will, again, lead those assembled in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Guernsey-Sunrise School Band and Chorus will present patriotic musical selections. The cornerstone of this year’s Veterans Day celebration will be an explanation and display of Prisoner of War and Missing in Action (POW/MIA) activities and efforts by the VFW and American Legion. The ceremony will conclude with the playing of “Taps” and the retiring of the colors.
Between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., meals are served at the VFW Post Home at 42 Idaho Street for veterans, active duty personnel and their families.
The public is also invited to join veterans and active duty for a meal.
On Sunday, November 11, at 11 a.m., the Presbyterian Church will ring its bells 21 times as a part of the national “Bells of Peace” program celebrating the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice agreement ending World War One.
