115 Years Ago (1903) 

Work continues on the ditch construction near Whalen Ranch six miles east of Guernsey. Fifteen teams will increase to two hundred just as soon as possible. The ditch will be taken out of the Platte River and run 42 miles east to within 10 miles of the state line. The ditch will reclaim 16,000 acres of land under the Carey Act and 12,000 acres of deeded and homestead land.

100 Years Ago (1918)

A large article explains the 1918 Federal Income Tax rules. All returns must be filed on or before April 1. You must file if you have net income of $1,000 or more and single, $2,000 or more for those married filing jointly. A physician is allowed the costs of a team or auto expense however, a dentist is not allowed those expenses as travel is not deemed necessary for the profession by the Internal Revenue Service.

65 Years Ago (1953)

The volunteer firemen were called to a fire at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Starmer. A

faulty refrigerator was believed to have been the cause. The contents of the home were a total loss with the building about a 75 percent loss. Some insurance was carried on the building.

30 Years Ago (1988)

The G-S FBLA team took third place at the state competition in Casper last week. The Vikings picked up five first-place individual finishes, three second-place trophies and a third and fourth place award each. First place trophies went to Diane Carpenter (Keyboarding), Monte Haddix (Job Interview), and Karen Dombeck (Public Speaking). Haddix and Dombeck also picked up first place trophies for their American Enterprise project.

20 Years Ago (1998)

Kelley’s made a $265 donation raised through cribbage tournaments to the Tri-City Parks and Recreation Department for the Little League program in Guernsey.

The process of completely opening BN Railroad’s Tunnel #2 in Guernsey State Park is underway.

A bridge will span the gap made after the project is completed to access the west side of the state park.

Five Years Ago (2013)

Two separate land deals involving the Wyoming Military Department could turn into economic positives for the Guernsey and Platte County communities.  The two deals include a transfer of military department property to the Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails.
