GUERNSEY—First American Farms and the Town of Guernsey will hold an informational meeting Wednesday evening at Guernsey-Sunrise Schools regarding the proposed Kosher Beef processing plant FAF plans to build north of U.S. Highway 26 about 10-12 miles west of Guernsey. The meeting will be held in the school’s multi-purpose room and set to begin at 6 p.m.
Representatives of First American Farms will give updated general information and timeframes on the proposed project.
Members of the Guernsey City Council and the Mayor will attend the meeting that is being billed as “an informational meeting only” for the benefit and dialogue between First American Farms and the Town of Guernsey to develop a better and more complete understanding about the project.
This meeting is not intended to be a public comment forum but the public is encouraged to attend to obtain current, factual information the Town is seeking to acquire.
While the project could provide a variety of perks to Platte County in terms of tax revenue, employment opportunities with competitive wages and benefits packages as well as increased student enrollment in the schools, the proposal has been met with some opposition from local residents who live near the proposed building site. Primary concerns expressed include lack of adequate of housing for the incoming workforce, ecological impacts to natural resources—especially water, increased local traffic in the area, and waste management.
In a Gazette interview last fall with First American Farms CEO Linda King, King said she has every intention of being a good neighbor to everyone who owns property near the proposed building site. While she acknowledges those concerns, King said she believes they will be adequately addressed as First American Farms has invested substantial time and funds to research and mitigate those issues.
