SARATOGA—After posting their first win of the season last weekend over NSI, the Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings found themselves struggling to get any kind of offense going against a Saratoga Panther team that was looking for redemption following a five-point loss to Hulett last week. The Panthers cashed in with a 59-0 win Friday on their home field.
The combination of a small roster filled with primarily young players has made this a tough season for the Vikes and Friday’s game was a perfect example.
Saratoga rolled up 279 total yards of offense, all on the ground, and had a 20-0 lead by the end of the first quarter on runs of 7, 31 and 9 yards. They added five more scores in the second quarter on carries of 34, 45, 15, 21 and a punt return of 45 yards to take a 46-0 lead by halftime. They added 13 points in the second half and continued to hold the Vikings at bay, claiming the 59-0 win.
The Vikings finished with 109 total yards of offense, all from the ground game.
They ran 34 plays in 35:44 time of possession. They were penalized four time for 25 yards and committed five turnovers.
They picked up five first downs but did not convert any third-downs in five attempts.
Freshman quarterback Brian McCoid completed 2 of 16 passes but no gained yardage and was picked off twice.
Freshman back Kolten Weinkauf led the rushing game with seven carries for 61 yards. Junior back Justin Malcom carried seven times for 29 yards. Senior back Jeremy Hartt ran the ball once for 15 yards and McCoid picked up three yards on two carries. Senior back Preston Elmore carried once for a yard. Weinkauf and Hartt had the two pass receptions but had no gained yardage to show for them.
Elmore led the Viking defense with three unassisted tackles and helped out on three more.
Hartt had two solo stops and two assists.
Sophomore linebacker Hunter Warner had two lone tackles. McCoid finished with one unassisted tackle and senior Preston Cooke was in to help on one tackle.
Weinkauf punted once for 33 yards. He also had five punt returns for a total of 76 yards. McCoid returned two for 31 yards and junior Brock Hohnholt returned four punts for 19 yards total.
The Panthers ran 20 plays and had the ball for 13:37. They were penalized three times for 35 yards, picked up 10 first downs and converted 1 of 2 third down attempts.
The Vikings drop to 1-4 overall and hold a 1-3 conference mark. Saratoga moves to 2-2 overall and a 1-1 in their conference. They will face Hanna-Elk Mountain next Saturday.
The Vikings will head to Midwest this Thursday to take on the Oilers. This week could be a chance for the Vikings to get another win as Midwest has losses to Dubois (70-10), Hanna-Elk Mountain (83-10), Kaycee (61-0) and a loss by forfeit to Lingle-Fort Laramie last week. Their only win came over NSI, (38-32), the same team the Vikings defeated in their lone victory as well, which predicts a good matchup with these two foes.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
