New clerk and treasurer duties agreeing with Jasmine Sterner

GUERNSEY – Born and raised in the Wheatland/Chugwater area, local Platte County girl and Chugwater graduate, Jasmine Sterner, who has been a faithful Guernsey resident of late is the new face at the town council meetings.

Sterner has replaced Kate Farmer as the town of Guernsey clerk/treasurer, and she has hit the ground running with much to learn and much to do. Sterner most recently worked at First State Bank in Guernsey as a teller and new accounts specialist and moved her expertise to the north side of highway 26.

After high school, Sterner moved over to Carbon County and moved to Guernsey where she has worked at the bank for nearly seven years.

Sterner comes to the town of Guernsey with not only a lot of experience in the financial sector, but also has her Bachelor of Science in finance and economics from Grand Canyon University which she finished while working at the bank and raising three children. To say the words organized and driven are good adjectives for Sterner.

In addition to her expertise in finance and government affairs, Sterner also has developed her passion for making jewelry and has peddled her craft at fairs and bazaars.

“The jewelry, I’ve probably been doing that about two years,” she said. “I learned that it was something that could be done because it’s all hand stamped, and so I just got a stamping set and tried it out and enjoyed it.”

As for her duties at the township, her first full day began May 14.

“I knew the job was coming open because I knew Kate was moving,” Sterner said. “So, I was able to train with her a little bit. Everything is unknown before you get into it, but so far, I think it’s going pretty good. I have a lot of resources that I have been able to reach out to.”

Sterner mentioned that the challenges so far are how all the pieces of Guernsey fit together.

“I oversee the budget and am responsible to prepare all the information presented to the council,” she said. “There’s a lot of pieces from a lot of different places in the community such as Parks and Rec and the economic development. I am also working on some grants.”

She says that she is pretty busy and it’s too early to know what the favorite part of the job will be.

Sterner was officially sworn in by Mayor Nicholas Paustian May 18 and with all the flurry of summer activities she has been very busy.

“One thing I know about being here is that I have always loved Guernsey,” she said. “I moved here in 2012 and I am planning to stick around. It’s such a neat community.”
