GUERNSEY – The Lady Vikings were home against Midwest Sept. 19 and put on an impressive show of strength.
Although Midwest had some heavy hitters and thundering kill attempts, Guernsey had an answer for each smash and a dig for every spike. The three-headed monster of Chloe Heer, Macoyia Stoneking and Alexis Elmore combined for 10 of the 15 team digs and had their opponents scratching their heads as to what more they could do. The bruising on the elbows and knees of the Lady Vikings were true battle scars of the fight they had won, digging in the trenches.
The first set was never close as the Lady Vikings came at Midwest with a fierce offensive flurry to set the tempo for the match. When the dust settled, the score was 25-16. The second set saw the Vikings digging and diving their way to stopping everything Midwest threw at them and outmatched the Oilers 25-11. Although Midwest put up a little attitude in the third set, it was too little too late and the Vikings prevailed 25-18.
The team recorded 14 kills, led by Chloe Heer, Afton Kelley and Bella Milton with 3 each. Macoyia Stoneking led the team with 4 digs ofo the team's 15 total and Alexis Elmore led the team in blocked shots with 3. The team also had a strong day serving with a 92% service percentage and they recorded 13 aces. Macoyia Stoneking led the team with 4.
“These young ladies played very well as team and maintained a positive attitude throughout the game,” said Guernsey varsity volleyball coach Mindy Kelley. “It was great to see them smiling and having a good time on the court.”
Guernsey will play four matches this week, at Glendo today, at Rock River Thursday and then home on Friday vs Hulett and home on Saturday against Saratoga.
