Lady Vikes top Midwest in come-from-behind run

LINGLE—The Guernsey girls picked up their first win of the season in their third game of the Lingle-Fort Laramie Tournament held this past weekend in Lingle.

The Lady Vikes came away with a 52-37 win in a game that didn’t look like it would go their way at all in the first half.

Midwest came out firing from the arc and hit seven of 11 three-pointers to take a commanding 31-19 lead by halftime.  But fouls and a strong recovery by Guernsey-Sunrise proved to be the Lady Oilers undoing in the end.

Stepping up their defensive effort early in the second half, the Lady Vikes managed to tie the score midway into the third quarter.  To compound their problems, Midwest had just six girls on the roster and ran into double foul trouble as two of their players went to the bench with five each just as Guernsey-Sunrise knotted the score.

In a show of good sportsmanship, Viking Head Coach Troy Reichert held a player at half-court to accommodate Midwest’s shortage the remainder of the game, but the Lady Vikings continued to drop in points and play good defense, holding the Lady Oilers to just six second-half points to get the win.

The Vikes put three players in double figures.  Trinity Ayers led their scoring with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Blake Rose added 14 points and one rebound.  Whitney Martin finished with 11 points, 14 rebounds and five steals.

Kacey McCoid pitched in six points and had one rebound and a steal.

Lakin Reichert added a bucket and had six rebounds and six steals.

Chloe Heer hit a free-throw and had six rebounds, Kassidy Morales finished with six rebounds and Krista Malcom had five assists.

The Vikes hit 18 of 71 two-point shots and three of 12 three-pointers.  They sank seven of 21 free-throws, had 44 rebounds (29 offensive) and committed 16 turnovers.

The Lady Vikings opened the tournament against St. Stephens, a team that is already ranked fourth in the state and had no trouble showing why as they rolled to a 54-13 lead by the half and went on to take a 69-24 win

Guernsey hit just five of 22 two-point shots and two of 12 treys.  They made eight of 20 free-throws and took down a total of 18 rebounds (four offensive).  They committed 25 turnovers.

Whitney Martin finished with eight points and four rebounds. Reichert had seven points and five rebounds. Ayers had three points and four rebounds. Rose had three points and one rebound, Lexi Elmore added a bucket and Heer hit a free-throw and had one rebound.

Turnovers and poor shooting also hurt the Lady Vikes in their second game on Friday as they fell to Kaycee 45-26.  The Lady Bucks held a 25-8 lead at halftime.

They hit just four of 26 two-point shots and four of 15 three-pointers.  They made six of 10 free-throws, pulled down 34 rebounds and committed 29 turnovers.

Reichert finished with seven points and three rebounds.  Rose hit six points and had three rebounds and three steals.  Ayers had four points and five rebounds.  Mickayla VanNatter had three points and two rebounds; Whitney Martin had a bucket and six rebounds, McCoid finished with two points and two rebounds, Heer had two points and two rebounds and Morales collected fie rebounds.

The Lady Vikes will finish their pre-holiday portion of the schedule tonight in Lusk.  Their first game of the new year will be Friday, January 3rd when they host Morrill, NE.
