Junior high boys’ hoops teams off to great start!

GUERNSEY—The junior high boys’ basketball season is well underway and despite season-opening losses to Lusk’s A and B teams, the Vikes have been on a winning streak since.

Guernsey-Sunrise played host to Lusk on January 16th, with A and B team games.

The Viking B team came up on the short end of a 26-20 score.  Poor shooting in the first half gave the Tigers a 10-5 lead that made a Viking comeback a tough assignment.  But the Vikes did manage to play nearly even ball in the second half and kept the loss respectable.

Dawson Bingham scored seven for the Vikes and Kolten Weinkauf put in six.  Alex Waring tossed in four and Aiden Noggle had the other three points.

The A team also came up short 33-24, falling behind 17-6 by the end of the first half.  Tristan Hohnholt had 12 points including a pair of treys.  Brian McCoid added four points, Ashton Newbern had three, Kolten Weinkauf added two and Alex Waring hit a free-throw.

The Vikings took on Chugwater next, playing just one game.  The Vikes were way too much for the Buffs and came home with a 45-11 win.

Alex Sturdivant led the scoring with 12 points, followed by Chris Ramos with eight, Ashton Newern with six, Dawson Bingham and Aiden Noggle each with four, and Tristan Hohnholt had three.  Bryce Stenson, Kolten Weinkauf, Alex Waring and Brian McCoid each had two.

Next the Vikings played host to Lingle-Fort Laramie for A and B games.

The B team rolled to a 30-11 win.  Aiden Noggle led the Vikes with 16 points.  Dawson Bingham added nine, Kolten Weinkauf pitched in four and Austin Harms added a free-throw.

The A team game proved to be an exciting turn-around game for the Vikings.  The Doggers jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the first quarter as the Vikes struggled to work the ball in to the easier buckets.  Lingle was still up 25-19 at the half but the Vikings came out in the final two quarters and turned the game around with some better shot selections and went on to win

Tristan Hohnholt found the three-point range in the second half, knocking down four of his five three-pointers in the fourth quarter.  He lead all scorers with 27.  Bryce Stenson and Brian McCoid each pitched in seven points, Kolten Weinkauf had four and Ashton Newbern added three.

The Vikings played Glendo Monday afternoon (results not available at press time) and will head to Lusk on Thursday.  Games begin at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m.

They’ll be at Lingle next Tuesday (Feb. 6) and at Wheatland on the 12th.  They’ll finish up the season that week with games at Glendo on the 13th and Rock River on the 15th.
