Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings prevail for homecoming

Posted

GUERNSEY – After a spirit week of pumped up adrenaline, the Vikings took the football field without two of their big linemen and proceeded to take the hard-fought victory over Sioux County 44-42.

The first and last stanzas of the game belonged to the Warriors as they came out and took a commanding 18-6 lead. The Vikings then went to work, scored 32 points in the middle quarters and held their ground as a fierce fourth quarter rally saw 24 points go up on the board against them.

Victory didn’t come without a price as GSHS lost Tristan Hohnholt for the next four weeks to a broken arm. Before the break occurred late in the fourth quarter, Hohnholt was having a career game gaining 92 yards receiving and 16 yards rushing. He also managed to cross the goal line four times.

Senior Rawland Isabelle who anchors the defensive middle, is a wide receiver and kicks off for the team also scored two touchdowns as he had three receptions for 42 yards.

The team field general, Brian McCoid who had broken his wrist in the first playoff game last season at Meeteetse was in rare form, going 13-22 for 172 yards and four touchdowns. He also managed to be the team’s leading rusher with 74 yards on the ground. On defense he grabbed two interceptions. Kaleb Foggie was second in rushing, gaining 52 yards and scoring one touchdown.

Sioux County was 12-27 for 226 yards through the air and gained 90 yards on the ground on 29 attempts. GSHS gained 148 yards on the ground.

On the defensive side, Cooper Harriman lead the team with nine tackles and Isabelle and Hohnholt each recorded seven.

“Winning your homecoming game is always a special moment but I think this one will be even more special given the circumstances,” head coach Curtis Cook said. “Anytime you have to pause your football program even for a little while it makes a big difference.  Coming off five days in quarantine and being back on the field we had to get back in sync, back in rhythm and our conditioning was not where it needed to be but the boys found a way to win.  Now we start conference play for playoff seating this week with Hanna and we'll get a couple of key players back that we didn't have this week but we also lost a key player which is the nature of football but hopefully he'll be able to return soon. Other guys will have to step up and carry that load for us as we move closer to the playoffs.”

Guernsey-Sunrise which improved its record to 1-2 travels to Hannah-Elk Mountain for a Saturday clash with kickoff scheduled for noon.
