GUERNSEY – The Guernsey-Sunrise High School grounds were decorated in black and white streamers, signs adorned the football stadium, students were wearing cool business casual outfits all week, but on Friday night it was all business as the volleyball team and the football team went to battle for their school’s honor against opponent Sioux County.
On Thursday the school was split into four teams, red, blue, green and black as a warm up and training to get them in the mindset for battle. The day was dubbed, “Hawaiian Day” and students had everything from a heavy slather of sunblock on their noses to Hawaiian leis around their necks.
The afternoon was spent in the spirit of competition as the first game played was the annual peach fuzz volleyball game where teams split up and found out just how difficult that sport really was. After student competition, the final game was the staffers against the students. The battle was neck and neck all the way through, but in a last second flurry of volleys and a hard serve by shop teacher Troy Reichert, the staff came out on top 15-13.
It was then on to the football field where the girls were paired off against each other as the white team and the black team. With some of the varsity boys as coaches, it was a heated battle and although it was very competitive, there was no tackling as each player had flags for this power puff flag football game.
Friday brought one more pep rally with pep speeches by volleyball coach Mindy Kelley and football coach Curtis Cook as the teams stood behind their coaches. It was then off for a bobbing for apples competition which the seventh graders won and then the musical chairs competition which was won by Aidan Noggle.
The week concluded with Friday night volleyball and football against Sioux County and then a homecoming dance on the tennis courts Saturday night where some very exhausted kids hit their racks and slept until noon on Sunday.
The homecoming week which was in jeopardy at the beginning of the week due to COVID restrictions and quarantines went off as scheduled as requested.
