GUERNSEY—Though they are no longer physically with us, somewhere Harriet, Chet and Rick Frederick are smiling and proud for what their family has built to help students get a solid education beyond high school graduation.
Although the family name is widely recognized for their historic ranching roots in the area, Harriet and Chet were educators themselves, and the desire to teach has also reached into several generations since.
With the loss of Chet in 1995, the family decided to establish a golf tournament to raise money for scholarships that would be awarded to local graduates to help them with college expenses. The first tournament was held in August, 1996 and has grown to be one of the biggest golf tournaments in the area, stretching to six flights over two days and 174 participants.
This year, 22 area students received a total of $10,550 which can be used at an institution of their choice. Award amounts increase each year to encourage students to not only attend college but to finish their degrees.
This year’s scholarships were presented to:
$700 to fourth year recipients:
Yasmen Foos – Black Hills State, Spearfish, SD
$600 to third year recipients:
Seth Frederick – Casper College
Brandon Deuel – University of Wyoming, Laramie
Chad Quynn – Laramie County CC, Cheyenne
Kevin Tang Logan – Penn State, University Park, PA
$500 to second year recipients:
