SUNRISE – This year is the 86th anniversary of the First Stone Age Fair that took place in Cornish, Colo. The ghost town of Sunrise is hosting this annual event and billing it as “The Stone Age Fair – Sunrise Edition.”
The event will take place at the old YMCA in the town of Sunrise, Sept. 26-27 from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Sunday. The YMCA was built in 1917 by John D. Rockefeller Jr., who had a financial interest in the mining camp that had been set up in the town of Sunrise.
Artifacts that have been dug from the grounds around the now defunct mine at Sunrise will be on exhibit and there will be a free artifact identification for people bringing in their personal finds.
Special speakers at the event include Dr. Juliet Morrow from the University of Arkansas who will be speaking Saturday at 1 p.m. about “red ochre” which is an ore that had mined in Sunrise for over 50 years. Owner of the town of Sunrise, John Voight will be speaking at 2:15 p.m. Saturday and will be giving a history of the town of Sunrise. Sunday, George Ziemens, former state of Wyoming archaeologist and leader of the Sunrise dig teams will be speaking about “Powars II” which gives a history of the current dig and how it may one day be considered a world dig site.
Ziemen’s wife, Geri who works with him as an archaeologist for the Sunrise dig said, “We are excited about the upcoming weekend and hope that a lot of people come and find out just how exciting things are becoming in Sunrise.”
According to Geri Ziemens, the directions from Guernsey, which is on Highway 26 west of Fort Laramie, are as follows: Turn North on Hwy 270 to Hartville by the Guernsey cemetery only 4 miles to Hartville. At Hartville turn east and go thru main street Hartville about 1 mile to Sunrise there are signs to follow. It is a paved highway all the way to Sunrise.
This is a free event and the public is invited. This weekend was partially funded by the Platte County Lodging & Tourism organization. For more information about the weekend or the Sunrise dig, please call George Ziemens at (307) 575-2010.
